Purpose : To investigate the association between smartphone use time and the prevalence of dry eye among young adults based on the questionnaire during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Methods : A survey was conducted through questionnaire with University students. Dry eye disease was assessed using the ocular surface disease index (OSDI) questionnaire. According to the OSDI score, dry eye was classified as mild (13~22), moderate (23~32), or severe (33~100).
Results : A total of 282 completed questionnaires were received, but 157 questionnaires were analyzed except for respondents who do not meet the criteria. In this study, during the COVID-19 pandemic, 77% of respondents spent more time using smartphones and the diagnosis of dry eye through OSDI was normal in 98 (62.4%), 30 (19.1%) were mild, and 16 (10.2%) were moderate and 13 (8.3%) were severe. OSDI showed a significant correlation with the increase in smartphone use time (r=0.241, p=0.012).
Conclusion : Prevalence of dry eye was considered at 37.6% of 157 respondents. Dry eye disease was found to be associated with an increase in smartphone usage time.
